There is a song out there by Benjamin William Hastings called “If it wasn’t for Jesus.” If you have not heard it, exit this blog post and go listen to it. It has quickly become a favorite of my wife and mine.
Have you ever sat down and pondered that question for yourself? If it wasn’t for Jesus, where would I be? What would my life be like?
It can be easy to look back and see the way that God has worked in your life. The trial that you went through years ago starts making more sense and you can see the way that God has worked in you or through you. There might be a moment of appreciation for the work God has done, but then life continues and we seem to start forgetting.
We forget that our life would not be the same without Jesus. We forget how He alone has carried us, supported us and comforted us.
Take a moment to think. Look back at your life and all the ways Jesus has guided you. The way the Holy Spirit has led you.
Your answer to this question may look like this:
If it wasn’t for Jesus, I would be divorced.
If it wasn’t for Jesus, I would be a drug addict.
If it wasn’t for Jesus, I would be in an abusive relationship.
If it wasn’t for Jesus, I would be in prison.
If it wasn’t for Jesus, I would be dead.
The Lord is always doing a work in you and me. This work won’t be completed on this side of salvation, but He is always working (Philippians 1:6). And He works all things together for the good of those He loves (Romans 8:28).
So today, be reminded of all that you are because of Jesus. Because of His sacrifice on the cross.
Because of Jesus, you are:
- A child of God
- A friend of God
- A new creation
- Justified and redeemed
- Crucified in Christ and no longer a slave to sin
- Chosen
- Holy
- Blameless
- Forgiven
- A member of the family of Christ
- A citizen of heaven
If it wasn’t for Jesus, we would not have the hope of a future in heaven, living for eternity in the glory of the Creator. If that is not something to be thankful for, then I am not sure what is.
Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:28 “we know that all things work for the good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.”
